Background
The Sir John Golding Rehabilitation Centre (formerly the Mona Rehabilitation Centre) is a 70 bed hospital which was started in 1954 during the polio epidemic. The centre, which was founded by Sir John Golding, a British orthopaedic surgeon, served as the only centre in Jamaica and the English speaking Caribbean which catered to the rehabilitation of patients afflicted with polio.
Our Mission
Zion Care International in its mission to providing first-class care to impoverished, under served, communities around the world, has embarked on a medical mission to provide prostheses to the Sir John Rehabilitation Centre. To aid in facilitating this venture ZCI has collaborated with the Montefiore Hospital the most ‘Outstanding’ patient care provider in the united states.
The Arm
On our journey ZCI incollaboration with the Montefiore Rehabilitation provide a paitent at the Sir John Golding Rehabilitation with a Myoelectric controlled prosthesis for his forearm.
A myoelectric prosthesis uses the existing muscles in your residual limb to control its functions. One or more sensors fabricated into the prosthetic socket receive electrical signals when you intentionally engage specific muscles in your residual limb. Sensors relay information to a controller, which translates the data into commands for the electric motors and moves your joints. If muscle signals cannot be used to control the prosthesis, you may be able to use switches with a rocker or pull-push or touch pad.
Even though Mr. Morris is the highlight of this mission, it is good to know that he will not be the only individual to benefit from our missions. As ZCI continues its mission and will bring medical care, more individuals in need will benefit from additional prosthesis in missions to come.
