ALEXANDRA HOSPITAL
Alexandria Hospital – Zion Care International’s (ZCI) support of the Alexandria community in St Ann, Jamaica, began on our first mission to the island in 2012, when we donated more than US$400,000 worth of medical equipment and supplies to the hospital. At that time, the medical mission comprising over 30 doctors, nurses, dentists, hygienists and other support staff, held a five-day dental and medical mission in the community. Since then Zion Care has continued support of the facility over the years and this support will be maintained.
SIR JOHN GOLDING REHABILITATION CENTRE
Now officially known as the Sir John Golding Rehabilitation Centre, the facility, which was established in 1954 during the polio epidemic, (by John Golding, a British orthopaedic surgeon) has served as the only one of its kind in Jamaica and the English speaking Caribbean. Zion Care International has assisted the institution by providing prosthetic limbs, wheelchairs and crutches. A key element in ZCI support of the institution is the establishment of facilities to manufacture prosthetic limbs at the Mona campus of the University of the West Indies.
KINGSTON PUBLIC HOSPITAL (KPH)
Kingston Public Hospital (KPH) – A major project that Zion Care International has undertaken is the adoption and upgrading of the Mary Seacole wing at the KPH. Over J$54 million will be spent on upgrading the ward. “I want it (Mary Seacole wing) to be the Tony Thwaites wing of the Kingston Public Hospital,” Bishop Craig Brown of ZCI stated. “We’re putting in air condition units, taking out the fans, changing the windows, we are committed to give them at least 30 new beds.” The nurses station at the ward has benefitted from a donation of a microwave oven and electric kettle, by ZCI. The transformation of the ward is expected to be completed by April 2017.
